INTERPRETING
Although in everyday language they are often used interchangeably, the terms “interpretation” and “translation” are not synonymous. Translation means transmitting the meaning of a text (written or recorded) from one language to another, the translator having at his/her disposal in order to produce a precise translation both the additional time needed to assess and revise each word and sentence and additional resources (dictionaries, glossaries, etc.).
Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting is the transmission of the meaning of a verbal message from one language to another. It usually takes place using special devices (headphones, microphone, an entire audio system). The brain is subjected to a consistent effort, therefore not many translators are willing to interpret. The interpreter conveys the message in the target language as quickly as he/she can formulate it from the source language, while the target language speaker continues to speak. The interpreter sits in a soundproof cabin, where he/she has visual contact with the speaker, and through the translation console he/she can listen to the speech through the sound system and interpret it in the target language. Simultaneous interpreting is received by the target language listeners in the headphones. This method is most common in situations where there is a need for interpretation in multiple target languages simultaneously and time is limited.
It is recommended to use two interpreters for simultaneous interpreting, especially for longer messages with high informational flow. A translator interprets actively for a period of time, and his/her colleague assists him/her by pursuing the accuracy of specific terms, figures, etc. The two interpreters exchange roles more or less often, depending on the rhythm and amount of information in the speech. This ensures the continuity and quality of the service.
Consecutive interpreting
In consecutive interpreting, the interpretation of the message from the target language into the source language is done sequentially. The message is divided into segments, and the interpreter sits next to the source language speaker, listening while he/she delivers his/her message. When the speaker pauses, the interpreter conveys that part of the message in the target language. Consecutive interpreting has the disadvantage of being twice as long as simultaneous interpreting. At the same time, the technical requirements are reduced: for small rooms there is no need for special equipment, and for large rooms only a sound system is needed.
Sometimes it is necessary to translate a document during consecutive interpreting. In this case interpretation and translation are combined; The interpreter must convey the document from the source language into the target language as if it were written in the target language. This usually happens in the legal and medical fields, and also others.
Whispered interpreting
A special case of simultaneous interpreting is whispered interpreting. The interpreter sits next to a small group of listeners of the target language and whispers a simultaneous interpretation of the message; The method does not require any equipment, but it may also be done through a microphone and headphones if the participants prefer it that way. Whispered interpreting is used in situations where the majority of a group speaks a specific target language and a minority (ideally no more than 3 people) speaks another target language.
